Kilcarry Bridge initially came to attention when winning at the first time of asking, in a Bennettsbridge point-to-point in 2013. Now a ten-year-old John Ryan's charge was back in County Kilkenny today to reach a career high by landing the featured Grade B Holden Plant Rentals Shamrock Handicap Chase at Gowran.
Kilcarry Bridge is from the family of 2008 Irish Grand National hero Hear The Echo.
The stamina of the family was in evidence again here as the Donagh Meyler-ridden 10/1 shot lasted it out much better than Black Zero (had looked a likely scorer) to prevail by two and a half lengths.
The always to the fore Kilcarry Bridge's half-brother New Kid In Town pulled up.
Ryan said: "Off that weight I knew he had a huge chance. The trip (2m1f) was too short for him last time. It was 2m2f today on a bigger track and really he's a two and a half mile horse. He's as tough as nails.
"He's entered in the novice handicap chase at Cheltenham but he won't get in. I think that much of him. He's the real deal.
"He will probably go for the Aon Chase at Punchestown. That might be his next run, and he would prefer better ground. He handles soft but is better on good ground. He will campaign away for the summer.
"Draycott Place (stable companion, finished last) is probably not over his fall at Thurles last time. He didn't travel like he usually would."
C.D. Maxwell, rider of Westerners Son trained by Dermot Anthony McLoughlin, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount stopped quickly and pulled up.
