Jon Ess was an appropriate winner at Dundalk this evening as he landed the Fundraise At Dundalk Stadium Handicap on the third anniversary of the passing of his eponym John Shortt, thus scoring a sixth career win for his trainer Conor O'Dwyer.
Trainer O'Dwyer named the six year old 'Jon Ess' after the initials of his late friend and jockey John Shortt, who passed away on February 13, 2017.
Today the son of Dragon Pulse notched his fifth win at the Co Louth venue when scoring easily, under Bill Lee, by three and a half lengths from runner-up Guild
Afterwards trainer O’Dwyer later reported “coming up here I thought he’d a great chance but I didn’t think he would do that.
“Billy reckoned that was his best performance and he’s ridden four winners on him. I’m pleasantly surprised and we’ll see what the handicapper does with him now.
“We’ll mix and match Flat and hurdling for the summer. He jumps hurdles great and was unlucky once or twice not to win a hurdle. He’s an unbelievable horse for a syndicate to have, he’s so sound and genuine.”
