Apprentice Derby hero Tonkinese a 4th Joseph O'Brien winner on the day Joseph O’Brien capped off a good day’s work with a fourth Friday winner as Tonkinese took the concluding race at the Curragh, the Extra.ie Apprentice Derby. King Pellinor (Mark Walsh, at Tipperary), Gee Rex (Declan McDonogh) and Music To My Ears (Wayne Lordan) were the previous Carriganog Racing winners, and the well-supported Tonkinese was partnered by Dylan Browne McMonagle. Backed from 10/1 into 6/1 second joint second favourite, Tonkinese was soon tracking the leaders from his wide draw in stall twenty one. The Syndicates Racing-owned seven-year-old travelled sweetly to the business end but nearly gave it away drifting to his left. Another well-backed 6/1 shot, Sayo, flashed home for second, beaten just half a length, whilst O’Brien also had the third, Isotope, a neck back. “I'm delighted with that. I'm delighted for Jack (Cantillon) and all in the syndicate. There are a big team of people in the horse and they will have got great sport out of that,” said O'Brien. “Dylan gave him a lovely ride from the draw. He's a consistent horse and has progressed with his runs. “It worked out well for him today. He travelled into the straight and there was a good gallop on in front of him.” A.M. Glynn, rider of Narynkol (GB) trained by Denis Gerard Hogan, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount he got his whip caught in his mounts mane while changing hands. The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Narynkol (GB), ridden by A.M. Glynn, and trained by Denis Gerard Hogan. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and the trainer's Authorised Representative Phil Heenan. A.M. Glynn stated that he was instructed to ride his mount handy to see how he was travelling and to do the best he could. He was happy with how his mount travelled and thought the race went well. A.M. Glynn reported to the Clerk of the Scales that he had gotten his whip caught in the horses mane and he stated that this caused him to lose his rhythm, unbalanced him and it was too late when he tried to make a challenge. Phil Heenan confirmed the instructions given to A.M. Glynn and stated that A.M. Glynn is not a strong rider and that this catches the eye, however he was satisfied with the ride given to Narynkol. The Stewards also received a report from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board Veterinary Officer who stated that Narynkol was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that D.G. Hogan and A.M. Glynn were in breach of Rule 212 A (ii). Having considered the respective records in this regard, the Stewards fined D.G. Hogan 3000 Euros, suspended A.M. Glynn for 12 racedays and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee. The Stewards also suspended Narynkol for 50 days. (GC & EM)
