Ampeson lunged late to claim the Treo Eile Apprentice Handicap at Fairyhouse, giving trainer Gavin Cromwell an across the card treble after his two winners in Listowel this afternoon. Shawaamekh made a bold bid from the front in the seven-furlong heat but couldn't hold the late charge of Ampeson.
Robert Whearty got a good tune from the six-year-old late on as he swooped to record a neck success.
The 9/2 winner was making his first start for the yard and Whearty said afterwards:-
“I thought the ground had dried out and I thought he'd handle it fine. He had been third on yielding ground in the past. It was ideal and it worked out.
“I landed down the rail and I didn't think I'd get much of a run if I tried to edge out so I said I'd stay where I was and if it happened it happened.
“Thankfully things opened up for me and he hit the line well. That's his sixth win now and hopefully he'll continue his run.”
