Alf proves all Right in the opener Alf Right opened his account under Rules when taking the opener at Clonmel this afternoon, a maiden hurdle over an extended two miles, in fine style. Trained by Eoin Doyle for one of his principal patron’s Paul Holden, the King’s Theatre gelding travelled sweetly to head the front-running Miradane early in the straight. The 11/4 favourite soon quickened clear under Barry Geraghty and had little trouble holding off Flaming Pop (12/1), who kept on nicely in the straight to finish two and a quarter lengths adrift. The 7/1 chance Coolking completed the placings a further five and a half lengths back in third. The six-year-old’s only previous success was in a Milltown point-to-point last November and Doyle said, “He was entitled to win although we were disappointed with him the last day. “He probably wants better ground and Barry said that as well. He travelled so well today and we’ll see where we go from here. His job is done now.”
