Gavin Cromwell has been left scratching his head over Limerick Lace's performance in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday.

The seven-year-old mare was supported down to 13/2, but was always in rear and finished well adrift of the winner Royale Pagaille in fifth place.

Cromwell said: “She’s fine and there is not a bother on her this morning (Sunday). I was very disappointed with her and I’ve no excuse.

“She was in great form going over there.

“She is a lady and can be a bit of a madam, but to be honest I don’t know.

“She never really looked happy, but was certainly plenty fit enough.

“It was disappointing and it’s back to the drawing board.”

The Walk In The Park mare has won seven of her 19 races under rules.
