Tom Marquand, the rider of Royal Dornoch (IRE), which finished last of the seven runners, was asked to explain his riding instructions and the tactics that were adopted during this race, in particular, for the early stages.

The Stewards heard evidence, viewed recordings of the race from of all respective angles and also heard evidence from Oisin Murphy, the rider of Threat (IRE).

Marquand explained that he wanted to take a lead and to race wide, but without obtaining cover, as Royal Dornoch (IRE), in his opinion, was unsuited by being ridden in from behind in the colt’s previous run at Newmarket, where he was held up in the rear before being asked for an effort from four furlongs out, to be beaten by 19 lengths.

He added that he believed WITCHITA (IRE), ridden by Ryan Moore, having taken the lead, was going to obtain a position on the rail but instead sat one horse off the inside, leaving him with cover and in behind.

He continued that shortly after a combination of WITCHITA (IRE), going further towards the rail and Threat (IRE) shifting slightly left, enabled him a gap and clear running.

Murphy confirmed that having initially held his position on the outside of Moore he was aware of Royal Dornoch (IRE) on his inside and was mindful of not wanting to get jostled and his mount racing freely.
