It was just one of those things. today is probably the first time he’s really got soft ground in the last year or two. I thought it was a good performance and he’s done it well. We bought him to be a big staying handicap chaser and it’s a great pot. It’s great for Stephen O’Connor who has been with me from the start. I was very tempted to be going for the race tomorrow with him over three miles (handicap chase). Two miles is plenty short enough, I know he won the beginners' over two miles. Stepping up into better company, he definitely wants further. I was just worried about tomorrow if we get a deluge here tonight it could open up. He's a grand big horse. He has never really run a bad race, he has been very consistent and sure hopefully he will keep progressing. Daryl Jacob rode him in the spring for us at Fairyhouse and he suggested to have a go with him over the National fences, so that could be an option down the line. That's Sam's first winner for me and sure hopefully he will get a few more. He gave him a great ride. He's had a good few rides for me but it is good to get a winner for him. After the first (fence), he was gaining at every fence.

When we saw the entries, we said we'd run if Danny was happy to ride him. Danny rang me the other day and walked the track and said he'd like to ride him. I have to thank him for this. JJ (Slevin) and Danny both said he should do well over fences. Danny walked this on Wednesday and told me the ground was lovely, in Mallow it was too quick for him. He needs three miles but we were quite happy with that. He'll handle a good bit softer than this. Jumping is a big strong point with him. He's a funny little horse, Danny pulled out wide as I don't think he likes being bullied inside in a big bunch. We had a cute man riding him. Have you ever seen a jockey to keep improving so much? He's brilliant. He works for small trainers really well because he puts a lot into it. JJ was suggesting to me that we should be looking at the Tim Duggan, he said that after Sligo. Danny said the same, that we should be looking at a decent handicap. He was thinking we could go out to three or three-and-a-half miles with him. He's in good order and fences seem to be improving him. He's something to look forward to.

I took a chance coming here so soon after Limerick and he is also way better going left-handed. I have him for two point-to-point and two hunter chases and he had finished second three times. Aintree is left-handed and I think now we are qualified to run in the Foxhunters Chase there. He'll go back point-to-pointing now but going left-handed, over a short hunters chase trip and the fences over there, will suit. This lad has a bit of class, has to be ridden positively and while he'll go on better ground, wouldn't want it too quick.

He handles the soft ground so well but it’s nice to see him on good ground today. He’s jumped from fence to fence. He’s a strange horse in his head and it’s taken him a long time to mature. We’ve had to be very patient. He’s put together three good runs and that’s the first time he’s done that since we’ve had him. I thought he was in front too soon as he can look about him, but the big track helps him as he’s coming home a long way. Maybe he could be competitive later in the year in one of those Nationals. He stays so well. Menindee fell when in front at the last in this race last year so that makes up for it.

He’s a real good actioned horse and I’d like to think there is a bit of improvement in him. He can be very keen amongst horses and we decided to go wide with him. That was the plan and it worked.
