Western swoops late to make winning debut

The Joseph O'Brien-trained Western City swooped late to make a winning debut in the mile maiden at Dundalk.

The Kitten's Joy colt, a half-brother to a US Grade 2 winner Chicago Style, went to post a 6/1 shot on his racecourse bow and was held up early on.

Danny Sheehy came wide in the straight and his mount only started to motor inside the final furlong, getting up late on to pip 22/1 shot Hoover Dam by a neck.

Sheehy, riding his first winner for the yard, said: "It was very good and I think he won snug in the end.

"First-time out he was green early on as I suspected but, as soon as he got organised in the straight, he did well to win from where he was.

"He was good now and I liked him.

"He handled the surface well and I'd imagine going further in trip would suit him better also."
