Smullen lands 38/1 Listowel double
Pat Smullen (7-up in the championship race) added to his gains on Hallie's Comet half-an-hour earlier by guiding Sean Og Coulston to a convincing length and three parts success in the Brandon Hotel Handicap at Listowel.
The John Coleman owned and trained six-year-old led a furlong out and he went on to see off Dundrum Dancer (a morning price market mover). That's A Fret, the third home with Ben Curtis aboard, hampered the fourth-placed Kammaan (Joseph O'Brien) when both were beaten inside the final furlong.
A delighted Coleman said: "He hadn't run on soft so it was obviously a concern. His half-brother Unhinged went on all types of ground so now he's shown he is capable of the same.
"Pat gave him a wonderful ride and I'm thrilled to bits. I sponsored here for twenty years and it's nice to have a winner. There is no racecourse in my opinion that generates such a welcome as Listowel. Hopefully I'll be able to celebrate the win with some of the directors here tonight, possibly out in Ballybunion."
Indications are that Sean Og Coulston could turn out again at Fairyhouse on Sunday if conditions don't deteriorate too much.
