The opening Pet Stop Maiden Hurdle at Sligo today appeared a two-horse race on paper but Sinndar Sandy didn’t read the script and scored a shock 50/1 win, for trainer Michael Cleary and jockey Adrian Heskin.
The daughter of Fast Company had failed to win in 11 previous flat starts and was today ridden from off the pace. Second favourite Cradle Mountain (13/8) arrived to take the lead from, seemingly, his principal danger and 5/6 favourite Aretesone jumping the final flight, as Sinndar Sandy moved into third. On the run-in, Sinndar Sandy found plenty to edge ahead close home and score a half length win.
Cleary was on lead-up duty with the winner, who was returned a 152/1 shot on Betfair.
“It was a great training performance by Michael,” said Heskin.
“I sat on her during the week and she jumped well so I said I'd love to ride her. She was very good and it's great when it works out like that.”
