Whiskey Sour rounded off a dream hour for trainer Eddie Lynam at Naas as he saddled a first ever treble with a thrilling victory in the Michael Higgins & Co Handicap. Tony The Gent looked to be coming with a winning run on the outer when striking the front inside the final furlong of this mile event.
However Whiskey Sour, a juvenile winner at the Galway Festival last year, benefitted from a typically powerful drive by Pat Smullen to get up in the final strides.
The 9/2 chance edged out the favourite by a short-head, with Rayisa also holding every chance just three quarters of a length away in third.
The Dunshaughlin trainer was successful earlier on the card with Future Icon (11/2) and Ottilie (3/1) to record a 142/1 treble.
Lynam said, “I wouldn’t have given anyone too much encouragement before the race as I thought he’d plenty of weight against good horses.
“Pat liked him and he’ll probably go for the three-year-olds’ mile handicap at Galway, although I don’t think we’ll get the jockey the next day!”
