Garcon Doux got up close home to deny Contrapposto in the Boulta Schooling Handicap Hurdle at Cork.

For much of the race it appeared as though the second placed horse would hold on but indifferent jumps at the three flights in the straight were undoubtedly the difference between victory and defeat.

Cian Quirke kept the Philip Fenton trained winner up to his task and managed to forge ahead close home.

It was a first success for the 50/1 winner who had failed to reach the frame in six previous starts.

Contrapposto was somewhat unlucky back in second, even if the hurdles are there to be jumped.

His superior flat speed saw him quicken away from his rivals on the flat but his poor jumping proved his downfall.

Philip Fenton, the winning trainer said; "he ran terrible the last day he ran in Gowran on heavy ground and today we said if could run a respectable race we'd be happy, but we got more than that.

"He had a nice run in Punchestown prior to Gowran and he will stay on the go for the summer. He should be alright in those rated hurdles.

"Niall Moore was due to ride him but was to ride for Gordon Elliott in the Irish National today until his ride Samcro was withdrawn, so missed out."
