Run For Firth proved tough in front as he repelled the challenge of Donatis Comet in the opening maiden hurdle at Galway this afternoon.

Brian O'Connell gave his mount a well-judged front-running ride to land the spoils in the two-mile event.

Donatis Comet, who had tracked the eventual 6/1 winner throughout, was asked for an effort after the second last as the front-runner kicked for home.

The 11/8 favourite looked for a moment like he might peg back his rival on the run-in but Run For Firth stuck his head out gamely in the closing stages to record a three-parts-of-a-length victory.

The Kieran Purcell-trained gelding, formerly a three-time point-to-point winner, was opening his track account.

“He won three point-to-points and has plenty of stamina,” said Purcell.

“He might lack a bit of toe but we knew the track here would suit him so that's why we came here.

“We'll stay hurdling this season with him but he'll go chasing next season.”
