Baresi landed a nice touch in the beginners chase at Roscommon as Rob Jones delivered him at the last to win after two miles five furlongs of racing.
The seven-year-old gelding was backed at all rates down from 5/1 to 100/30 and the horse he beat, His Highness was taken at 40/1 and returned at 22/1 as punters definitely got this race right.
His Highness ran a good race from the front after taking over the lead from Rockshandy at the seventh, but he was tapped for toe after the last and went down by two lengths. Jakros was a one-paced third. Punters deserted the favourite as he drifted from 7/4 to 5/2 in the morning and 9/4 to 11/4 at the track.
John Long trains the winner and he also won the bumper in Cork yesterday with Vintage Supreme. He said: “I didn’t think he would handle the ground. He hates it when it is sticky.
“I thought he had a chance at Galway, but he ran very badly and he’ll probably go for a novice or a handicap chase next.”
