Ballagh Star provided trainer Yvonne Dunleavy with a welcome winner when staying on strongly to make a successful debut over fences in the Cleveragh Handicap Chase at Sligo.

A 12-race maiden over hurdles, the six-year-old had been well backed on a couple of occasions of late.

A promising fourth at Galway last month, the gelded son of Ask made an immediate impact on his first start over fences.

Tracking the leaders in fourth from the off, Daniel King went second after two out, throwing down a strong challenge to leader Le Grand Vert at that final obstacle.

A mistake from the latter gave Ballagh Star the chance to edge ahead on the run-in to score by two-and-three-quarter lengths.

Daniel King said "It was his first run over chase fences but he jumped super everywhere. Early on he was very careful and was popping away and that's what you want over these longer trips. He was in a little tight to the last but was good and quick away from it and galloped to the line.

Yvonne Dunleavy, based in Turloughmore Co Galway, added: "He'd been running so well over hurdles but really needed a fence and gave an exhibition of jumping. It's a tough game for the smaller yards but days like this are great.

"He's only a baby and there should be more to come. I'm delighted for Peter (Curran, owner) who has supported us through thick and thin."
