It was hard work and Sean said he never travelled at all and the ground was a bit quick for him. He has had plenty problems over the years and when the ground is any way good, he was knocking the top off it and needs soft ground to be at his best. He is a ten-year-old now and has been around a while, and that is part of it too but today was the plan. His pedigree is all stamina and he does stay three miles. I don't know where he is going to go and you couldn't say he is the horse he once was but we'll peg along and try and keep him sound and run him wherever he has a chance. I would say at some stage we could try him over fences in one of those big races like the Irish National. There might also be a conditions chase he could run into as well. We'll see how the season goes along but every race we win with him is a bonus as he hasn't been easy to keep sound.

He nearly put me out of commission before the start as he gave me a kick in the stomach, but luckily enough there is plenty of padding there! . I'm thrilled with him as he really was just three quarters ready. The race was there and I thought we won't get as good a chance to run him again before the north. He'll be in the two and a half mile second season race and the three mile race up there. He might go for the three mile race because I think the three miles will suit him better. We will see how he is, hopefully he will come out of this okay. I'm thrilled with him and I'm thrilled with the ride he got as well. Sean knew he wasn't that wound up and that he had to hold on to him for as long as he could and he did. He made a few errors and if he could rule them out it would be great. He just lacks a bit of scope and he is not easy to train. He swims a lot and spends a lot of time in the spa, but when he is right he is not a bad horse. He might run over hurdles again at some stage, we'll see how the season goes.

We said we'd take our chance over fences and see how it goes and if it didn't work out we could go back to hurdling,. His schooling went great and he has spent half his time swimming as well. When he jumped he jumped well. We thought with the Grade 1 at Christmas he might struggle but if he took to jumping fences you wouldn't know where he could go. You'd have to be happy with his first run over fences. He did run in a point-to-point but that was his first chase. He was good other than the second last first time when Sean did well to stay with him. That's his first winner for me and I'm delighted for him. I've been very pleased with what he's been doing. He has great hands and horses jump great for him. He comes in to ride a couple of mornings and does a lot of schooling. He's a really nice lad too.

Paul said Monksfield was really struggling on that ground but said he always felt the he'd win. He'll be much better suited by better ground and actually did well to win as he's been held up with a bruise in his foot after he ran in the North. He is obviously a very clear-winded horse and could go further, but better ground is really the main thing with him.
