Off his chase rating you could say he’s thrown in but it doesn’t always work out that way. It’s pleasing to get it done. I was worried that it could turn into a bit of a messy race but he was just about okay. He was a little bit keen and in Mark’s hands most of the way round. He had a bit in the tank and stays well. It’s his first time completing a three-mile race so we’re happy with that and he’ll probably go to the Paddy Power (Chase) at Christmas. Off 134 hopefully he’ll get in, he would have the last couple of years and he’ll have a nice weight. He won a couple of races for us as a novice and then unfortunately picked up an injury. Last year when he came back he didn’t have a lot of experience and he’d days where he was a bit impatient. This year he’s been impeccable and is maturing with age. Hopefully it’s onwards and upwards for Christmas.

It's a great way to start the season with him and I said beforehand that I thought he'd improve for the run so hopefully he does. We had this race in mind for a while as he is a second-season novice and it's a good day for the local McDonagh family who had an earlier winner - I think half of Cratloe are here!. Mark gave him a really nice ride - I didn't over-burden him with instructions but he rode him exactly the way I would have liked. There's a Listed handicap chase at Navan on December 9 and he might go there. He won two races here in the past but the second day he got a 'leg'. It wasn't too bad though - it was just the timing of it, as it dragged out into another season. It turned out to be the making of him as he needed all the time.

I think we had the favourite (Henn See) beaten and I'm delighted he has won as he has done well to come back from injury. We thought he was a nice enough horse when he won two races a couple of years back. To be honest I was counting my chickens on his comeback run at Cork when he stumbled and fell a stride after the second-last fence. He was running a big race then when he was a bit in the jockey's hands and free early-on so I thought the drop to two-miles would suit. With his history of leg problems I'm not thinking too far ahead but we'll see what mark he gets and look for a rated novice.

He ran well the first day and then we went back for a bumper and it just didn't work out. The last day was a little bit of a disaster up in Leopardstown. Anyway, he made up for it today. It was a funny type of race. I thought he had plenty to do but this course rides testing since they switched the other way. When he was making up the ground, I could see the horses in front tying up and I thought at least he'll get to them. It's Mark's first win for his father in those colours, so it's an important win for him. I'm sure there is great excitement in the McDonagh household. We'll see how he comes out of this. He probably had a tough race today. We will probably look at some of those rated novice races. We'll see what kind of mark the handicapper gives him first.
