“It’s probably one of the most special winners that I’ve ever had.
“I should have sent him over fences last year and I got sidetracked. I didn’t want to retire him without going over fences as that is what we bought him for. Look what he can do now at 12. I should have gone earlier but there you are.
“People want to retire horses at 10, 11 or 12 but to me they have plenty of life in them if they haven’t used up the mileage as younger horses.
“They can go much longer than people think and he’s the living proof of it.
“He’s got stamina, he’s got speed, he can jump. He’s got the whole package and a will (to win) a bit like Un De Sceaux. They both want to train and get at the job, and you are really trying to not let them do too much. They have a huge attitude to racing and training.
“I would have been gutted if he was beaten today. A lot of people think if you take him on he will fold but he’s after showing in his last three races that he doesn’t.
“I’m going to enjoy today and we’ll leave any plans for another day.”

It was magic at Limerick. It was a very special occasion,. I don’t think we’ve seen him at his best since he came back after 18 months off, even though he has won three Grade Ones, but that performance at Limerick was up there. I suppose his consistency has gone a bit, but that was a huge performance. John Codd has been very happy with him since Christmas, so hopefully he can put in a similar sort of performance this weekend. It’s a good race. Battleoverdoyen is very good opposition, but Faugheen has put in some very good performances and had some big days in Leopardstown before. To me, it would be the biggest result of the weekend were Faugheen to win. Three 12-year-olds have won Grade Ones since 2000 — Monet’s Garden, Florida Pearl and Sizing Europe, so it would be a fair group to be part of.

He was brilliant over the first half dozen until he made that mistake —it was probably the first ditch that he’d seen!. Paul said he just put down and tried to do what he does over hurdles which is gallop out through it. Now he realises that you can’t do that and by the time he got over the last to Paul was very happy with him. He showed a nice turn of foot when he had to ask him to race going down to the last and after it. The engine certainly seemed to be there. I’m happy that we got today out of the way and we’ll see how he comes out of this before deciding where we go next.

I can't really describe it (the feeling). I got to ride him as a bumper horse - even when they knew he was special - just out at home and the whole place was like God you're allowed to ride Faugheen and you're only 16 and all this sort of stuff. To actually get the spin on him and for him to show up in that sort of form - John (Codd) and the team at home - they had him in tip-top shape. I didn't think there'd be a lot of pace today so I said I'd go on even over the three miles - it's a hard thing to do to be in front for that long but he loved every second of it. He travelled down the hill and I had to let him rock as I didn't want to be fighting with him. The bit of ease in the ground probably helped as well. Faugheen for me, and I've not been racing that long, is the best horse I've ever seen on his day. It just took three miles and a bit of give in the ground for him to show it. It felt like I was doing a hack canter the whole way around - it's unbelievable.

That was a good performance. Ruby didn't hang around and kept applying the pressure from the front. It was a gutsy ride,. On the book he had one horse to beat and that was Arctic Fire. He wasn't on the bridle at any stage though and when he's not on the bridle you know he's going some pace. Arctic Fire is a fair opponent and Ruby wasn't going to let him into it and use his speed. He was just afraid of Arctic Fire's speed and piled it on from the front to dampen his fire. From a mile out he started to apply it and I was wondering if he'd crack from so far out but he knew what he had underneath him. His jumping is better going faster. He's done it now in year one and we'll let him tell us how good he can be. Our Conor looked invincible when he won the Triumph but fate can go against you. I believe in him but he has to stand the test of time. He's very very good. We'll see now if the handicapper puts him past Hurricane Fly. I don't know if we'll travel back to England with him next season or stay at home. I'll have a word with the owner. We know he can travel to England and back and it doesn't seem to take anything out of him. But maybe we'll stay at home and tackle the Irish horses.

Vautour failed a late fitness test so I popped this fellow in. Hopefully he'll (Vautour) run later in the week though. This fellow likes going on at his hurdles and I was happy enough that he could take Vautour's place. Vautour will have no problem going two and a half anyway. That was very good on fast ground considering he was running on heavy all winter. It was a fair performance against those sort of horses. We'll have to consider staying hurdling next season. We bought him as a chaser but it's no harm having another good hurdler. Certainly on that performance you'd have to be thinking about all that (a Champion Hurdle campaign). We'll have to evaluate what else is in the yard and what else the owner has but he certainly could be one to keep hurdling. I think this trip is good enough for him. The only reason he didn't run at two miles all winter is because we had enough two mile horses and we knew he would stay. If you said to me that he'd put up a performance like that I'd have said it would be tough be he did it well. I think Vautour would have done that and better though. This fellow was sloppy at one or two of them but Vautour wouldn't have done that . he'd have been over them and gone.

he didn't jump well and perhaps it was because he was in front with no lead. However I think it was an awesome performance as he was keen and didn't jump and still won. He can go anywhere we like next and it's great for Emmet who is king of Limerick!
