all last year he was knocking on the door and was costing us because he ran in all the big handicaps. He finishing midfield, fifth or sixth and we contemplated selling him but had no buyers. he loves an ease in the ground and that was his first time winning over that trip. I imagine he'll be back up to getting into the big handicaps after that. That'll pay his way for the summer. He could go up to seven or a mile on nice ground and there will be more days in him. It's great to kick off the season with a winner, we ran a good few. Unfortunately for us we have to get a lot of ours into handicaps whereas some of the bigger yards can drive on with them in maidens. We've plenty of horses and it's good to get a winner for Joey (Sheridan) as this could be a good season for him. Hopefully he'll drive on from here.

he’s done it really nicely, and has been in great form his last couple of runs. He loves that ground. We thought the draw would be a big problem but he has plenty of early speed and we got a good position. He put the race to bed really nicely. I’m very fortunate to be with Denis; he gave me my first winner seven years ago, and to come back and ride a winner for him at Galway, at the Curragh and at Listowel is brilliant. We work so hard in that yard and it’s nice to get the winners on these days. The horses are in flying form and that’s due to the hard work of all the lads at home. I’m lucky I get to ride them in races.

It's great for Alan, who is a hard worker in the yard. He's been with me a while now and is really starting to improve,. It's great for him to get a winner and he really deserves a chance because he's dedicated, hard working and a pleasure to work with. Cyrus won on the beach and had form at Limerick last year on softer ground. He's versatile enough. I'm not sure if he'll go back to Laytown, there might be something there for him. It's a good syndicate (Westerners Syndicate) of lads from Mayo, they couldn't win an All-Ireland but at least they could win here!. They paid 11 grand for him last year and he's won twice now and been placed a few times, he was third in Galway to Make A Challenge who has boosted the form. I gave him a chance tonight and Alan did exactly what we asked him. Hopefully the handicapper won't be too hard on him. The other filly, Never Rains, ran well too. She travelled well and probably the ground might have caught her out a little at the end.

It was an average contest, he was travelling well amongst them but that's low grade stuff,. It's great to get the boys into the winners enclosure, it's hard to get in there. The boys came to me in May and we bought a horse out of Ascot. He got hurt very early on and I replaced him straight away with this lad. Hopefully we don't lose him but at the same time you run the risk when you run in a claimer. The boys have had a good day out and had a good few quid on him so it's job done for us anyway. They are a great bunch of lads and I think it's their first time venturing in to one. This summer they got together, they are all from Mayo and they're well connected to some other owners we have. Some of them are in the pub trade so I'd say it will be busy tonight.
