A query was raised to consider why Nicky Henderson was running Patroclus (IRE) here at Newbury on going described as Soft (Heavy in places), having reported that the gelding would have preferred quicker surface following its last run at Sandown on 13 March 2021, on going with the same official description, where the gelding was pulled up.
The trainer stated although the ground was not ideal, he needed to get a run into Patroclus (IRE) and due to a lack of opportunities, he was happy for the gelding to take its chance on this occasion.
Following the race, the representative of Paul Nicholls reported that Flash Collonges (FR), which was pulled up, was unsuited by the Soft (Heavy in places) going, and would prefer a quicker surface.
The Veterinary Officer reported that Fern Hill (IRE), placed second, had lost its right-fore shoe.
