An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Joey Steel (IRE), ridden by Adam Wedge and trained by Christian Williams, which was always in mid division to rear until making headway in the home straight to finish fifth, beaten 11 ¼ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race, The Veterinary Officer reported that the gelding had a scrape wound to the back of the right fetlock, which was bleeding, but other than that a post-race examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to drop Joey Steel (IRE) in and give it every chance to finish his race, which it had not been doing previously.
He further stated that he had been happy with his position throughout the race but on leaving the back straight, having given the gelding a slap, he had to sit for quite a few strides as he was caught behind three horses tiring and coming back in front of him.
He further stated that Joey Steel (IRE) jumped the second last well but when he gave it a slap was swishing his tail.
The trainer confirmed these instructions and stated that he was happy with the ride given to the gelding.
Their explanations were noted.
Joey Steel (IRE) was routine tested.
Adam Wedge was fined £140 for failing to report at scales that Joey Steel (IRE) was denied a clear run approaching the bend turning out of the back straight.
Following the race Connor Brace reported that Phoebus Lescribaa, placed second, hung badly left- handed.
Dave Crosse reported that Karl Marx (IRE), which was pulled up, moved poorly.
The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of Karl Marx (IRE) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
