An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Ariel (IRE), ridden by Kieran Shoemark and trained by Charles Hills, which from a wide draw was held up towards the rear of the field before appearing to be tenderly handled in the home straight, to finish eighth, beaten by 7¾ lengths.

The rider and the representative of the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the colt failed to reveal any abnormalities other than Ariel (IRE) had a small cut on its left-hind.

The rider stated his instructions had been to do his best from a wide draw in stall 10 and ride his race from there.

He added that from his draw and to his dissatisfaction he was unable to get over and was caught three horses wide.

He further added that turning in, the colt was traveling well but when attempting to go through a gap he was denied a clear run by the retreating Orphiuchus (IRE), unplaced, a fact he had reported at Scales.

The representative of the trainer confirmed the instructions and stated that he was satisfied the ride accorded with those instructions.

Their explanations were noted.

Following the race, John Egan reported that He Can Dance (IRE), placed fourth, hung left-handed.
