9 Ran
- Stewards Report
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Couldbeaweapon (IRE), ridden by Lorcan Williams and trained by Ben Pauling, which after racing prominently throughout and being asked for an effort leaving the back straight, then appeared to be considerately handled in the home straight before staying on evenly to finish fifth of nine runners, beaten 12¼ lengths.
The rider was interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to jump off, get the gelding settled and give him plenty of daylight at his hurdles, as he had not jumped fluently at Market Rasen last time out.
Williams explained that the early pace was muddling and he was able to settle handily, with Couldbeaweapon (IRE) racing keenly at times and being inclined to reach for his hurdles.
He added that when the pace quickened leaving the back straight, his mount was readily outpaced despite being driven along and thereafter he was mindful to keep the gelding balanced and ensure he jumped the final two hurdles in the home straight fluently.
Williams further added that in his opinion Couldbeaweapon (IRE) had obtained the best possible placing on this occasion after staying on at the one pace.
Williams also indicated he would be reporting to the trainer that Couldbeaweapon (IRE) would benefit from stepping up in trip and may additionally appreciate some ease in the ground.
His explanation was noted.
