An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Keep The River (GB), ridden by Bruce Lynn and trained by Iain Jardine which was patiently ridden before being asked for an effort approaching the last hurdle to finish third, beaten 16½ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; the Veterinary Officer reported a second post- race examination of the mare revealed her to be 1/10th lame left-fore.
The rider stated his instructions were to sit fourth or fifth, keep wide to get better ground and get the mare to finish as well as she could because she had fallen last time out.
He added that he felt Keep The River (GB) was struggling in the ground and he felt it necessary to hold on to the mare as long as possible to get her to finish out her race.
The trainer confirmed the instructions given but was not satisfied with the ride as he felt the rider had not ridden the mare handy enough throughout the race and left her with too much to do.
Being a 7lb conditional rider, Lynn was accompanied in the enquiry by a senior rider.
Lynn was suspended for 10 days for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure his horse was run on its merits throughout the race.
