An enquiry was held into the running and riding of BENNY’S SECRET (IRE) ridden by Grant Cockburn and trained by Nick Alexander, which was held up in rear before being asked for an effort to finish strongly into second beaten 2 lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race, and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated his instructions were to drop in and get the gelding settled as he has in the past ran keenly, before creeping through runners down the back straight and come with one run as BENNY’S SECRET (IRE) is a bridle horse.
He added that the gelding jumped slowly down the back straight and made a bad mistake at 5 out, meaning he was therefore unable to creep into contention as he would have liked.
The trainer confirmed the instructions and added he was happy that the ride did accord with the instructions given and stated that the gelding is always held up in its races.
He added that because of the jumping errors, BENNY’S SECRET had become further behind than he would have ideally liked, allowing the leading two horses to get a run on the rest of the field turning out of the back straight.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Adam Nicol reported that Ice Galley (IRE), which was pulled up, jumped poorly.
