Paul Mulrennan was questioned regarding his riding of Choosey (IRE) approaching and passing the 4 furlong marker, where the gelding had appeared to lose its position for no apparent reason and drop to the rear of the field, before staying on well in the home straight to finish sixth of ten runners, beaten 3¾ lengths.

Mulrennan stated that his instructions on Choosey (IRE), which is a confirmed hold-up horse, were to jump the gelding out and let him find his stride and travel comfortably.

Mulrennan explained that after jumping only moderately, Choosey (IRE) had then failed to muster any speed through the early stages.

He added that after taking a trail behind the free-running The Night Watch (GB) when the early tempo was fast, Choosey (IRE) was readily outpaced and he elected to keep the gelding balanced.

Mulrennan further added that he placed Choosey (IRE) under pressure near the 3 furlong marker, and the gelding had made up good ground in the home straight, giving him the impression, that Choosey (IRE) might be suited by a step up in trip to 6 furlongs, where he can find his feet and travel for longer.

He also indicated that Choosey (IRE) had responded positively to the removal of the tongue-strap on this occasion, and his recommendation to the trainer would be to continue with that gear being dispensed.

The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Mulrennan’s explanations were noted.

Following the race, Megan Nicholls reported that The Night Watch (GB), placed seventh, ran too freely and Cam Hardie reported that Qaaraat (GB), unplaced, ran flat.

The Veterinary Officer reported that Deconso (GB), placed fourth, lost its right-fore shoe.
