Permission was given for Totterdown (GB) to go early to post.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Militarian (GB), ridden by Mr James Martin and trained by Andrew Martin, which was in contention turning out of the back straight, but which, after being ridden for a short while, was allowed to drop out and coast home, to finish sixth, beaten 45¾ lengths.
The rider and the trainer were interviewed and shown recordings of the race and the Veterinary Officer reported that a post- race examination of Militarian (GB) failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The rider stated that his instructions were to ride the gelding handy and try and make an impression on the leaders in the back straight, as the gelding does not have much of a turn of foot.
He further added that Militarian (GB) gurgled when he asked him for an effort turning out of the back straight and he felt it prudent to ease him.
Having had a breather Militarian (GB) ran on in the straight to pass a runner.
Their explanations were noted but Mr James Martin was fined £140 for failing to report at scales that the gelding had a breathing problem.
Being a 7lb claimer Mr James Martin was offered to be accompanied in the enquiry but declined.
