An enquiry was held to consider why Tony Carroll was running Doc Sportello (IRE) here at Ascot on going described as Good to Firm, having declared the gelding a non-runner at Brighton on 9 August 2019 on ground with the same official description.
The representative of the trainer stated that, in the trainer’s opinion, the ground at Brighton had been riding faster than officially described and been showing signs of wear, having been raced on the previous two days.
Permission was given for Equiano Springs (GB) to go early to post.
Doc Sportello (IRE) unseated its rider on the way to post and cantered loose for a short distance.
Having been examined by the doctor and Veterinary Surgeon at the start, both the rider and gelding were deemed fit to race.
Inside the final furlong, Big Lachie (GB), unplaced, shifted left-handed before being quickly corrected by its rider, carrying A Sure Welcome (GB), unplaced, onto Lady Of Aran (IRE), unplaced, causing the rider of Equiano Springs (GB), unplaced, to take a check, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
Following the race, James Sullivan reported that Equiano Springs (GB), unplaced, ran too freely and was denied a clear run and Stevie Donohoe reported that Lady Of Aran (IRE), unplaced, was denied a clear run.
The Veterinary Officer reported that In The Red (IRE), unplaced, lost its right hind shoe.
The performance of A Sure Welcome (GB), which finished unplaced, beaten by 11 lengths, was considered.
John Spearing’s explanation that the gelding had been drawn on the wrong side was noted.
