- Stewards Report
Permission was given for Leodis Dream (IRE) and Birkenhead (GB) to both go early to post, and for Murbih (IRE) to wear a red hood to post.
The Thames Boatman (GB) collided with the rails in the chute, going out onto the course.
Having been checked by the Veterinary Surgeon at the start, the gelding was deemed fit to race.
Approaching the final furlong, The Thames Boatman (GB), unplaced, edged quickly left-handed, while racing greenly, giving Leodis Dream (IRE), placed fifth, a significant bump and unbalancing both runners, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved.
An enquiry was held into the running and riding of Intervention (GB), ridden by Theodore Ladd and trained by Michael Appleby, which was heavily restrained on leaving the stalls and settled towards the rear, before staying on well in the home straight from an unpromising position, to finish seventh of eleven runners, beaten by 3 lengths.
Ladd and the representative of Michael Appleby were interviewed and shown recordings of the race; and the Veterinary Officer examined Intervention (GB), post-race and had nothing to report.
The rider stated that as the gelding is a gassy sort, particularly after a break, his instructions were to try and settle the gelding mid division before mounting his challenge in the home straight.
However, after jumping awkwardly and losing considerable ground early on, he was further caught out by the strong early pace, which resulted in him being further back than intended.
Unable to chase Intervention (GB) along for fear of lighting him up, he allowed the gelding to make up ground gradually and, once he had switched round PADDY’S DAY (IRE) and obtained clear running, he was able to ask Intervention (GB) for its effort and was pleased with the way the gelding finished his race off in the circumstances.
He added that, in his opinion, Intervention (GB) would be best suited to sprint trips in the short term and would ideally appreciate a stiffer 5 furlongs.
Appleby’s representative confirmed the instructions and that he was satisfied with the ride.
Their explanations were noted.
Following the race, Kieran Shoemark reported that Lipsink (IRE), unplaced, was restless in the stalls, slowly away and was never travelling.
George Rooke reported that The Thames Boatman (GB), unplaced, hung left-handed inside the final furlong and the Veterinary Officer reported that the gelding had lost its left- hind shoe.
