- Stewards Report
Richard Johnson, the rider of the winner, Port Of Mars (IRE), appeared to ease the gelding after jumping the final hurdle, allowing the second and third-placed horses to close within 1½ lengths and 1¾ lengths respectively.
Johnson explained that Port Of Mars (IRE) had jumped the final hurdle well, with the gelding going away from the rest of the field, and with the ground being testing he did not want to put Port Of Mars (IRE) under any undue pressure.
However, the gelding had stopped quicker than he had anticipated when eased down and when realising that the second and third-placed horses were closing in the final furlong he commenced to ride Port Of Mars (IRE) out to the line.
Johnson’s attention was drawn to the risks associated with easing down in the closing stages when other horses may be finishing quickly.
Following the race, Sam Twiston-Davies reported that Kingsplace (IRE), which started favourite and finished second, hung right-handed throughout.
