Review tipperary 23rd Apr
< Campanile was only third jumping the last in the Kedrah House Stud 'Well Chosen' Handicap Hurdle but the mare got up in the dying strides to record a shock neck success at Tipperary.
At 40-1 (102-1 on the Tote) the David Kiely-trained six-year-old was the complete outsider of the 17-runner field.
Kiely said: "Denis (Hogan) gave her a great ride and she jumped well for him. She had a bad fall which hurt her back a while ago but she's right again now. She'll mix it between Flat and hurdling."< Compelled was given a typically well-judged ride by Ruby Walsh to run out a cosy winner of the Clubs & Societies Night At Tipperary Maiden Hurdle.
Despite not being placed on her three previous outings, the Willie Mullins inmate was sent off at 9-2 and travelled powerfully throughout the two-mile contest.
There was a brief moment of worry for her supporters between the final two flights as The Wifes Pet still held a sizeable advantage, but Walsh and Compelled slowly wore her down to score by three-quarters of a length.
Third at Cork last time out, Thomas O'Leary's Brave Jonnie (9-1) reversed form with runner-up that day Droim Toll to record a decisive success over the 100-30 favourite in the Fundraising Opportunities Handicap Hurdle.
O'Leary said: "I had Brave Jonnie 95% written off as useless before he was third at Cork the last day and he just seems to have improved - he had been showing nothing at home.
"We'll go for a winners' race or handicap next - he seems to go on any ground."
Brave Jonnie's rider Niall Madden had to settle for second when The Phantom Piper couldn't quite catch the Philip Rothwell-trained Rockers Field (6-1) in the Glenview and Rathbarry Studs Beginners Chase.
Rothwell explained: "I'm delighted for Donal (MacAuley) as he has now ridden a winner over hurdles and chases as a professional. Rockers Field jumped really well and loved that testing ground, although it was probably only an average contest."< For Bill looked an exciting prospect as he powered clear in the p2p.ie Point-To-Point Flat
