Serial Seller and Claimer performer Mighty Whitey sprang a 20/1 upset to win the opening Guinness Claiming Race, for the second time, at Sligo today, scoring for trainer Noel Kelly and jockey Oisin Orr.
The ten year old gelding had previously won this same race in 2012 and while he has competed in 11 Claimers or Selling contests (in Britain), has remained with owner Christina Kelly throughout his 54-race and eight-wins career.
Following today’s made-all win, the gelding’s fourth success at the venue, Kelly stated “we were saying on the way up that he loves this place and he won this race a few years ago carrying a stone more.
“He has lost a bit of his speed but the bit of rain helped and he got a handy lead in front. The young boy gave him a very good ride.
“He might got to Cartmel in a couple of weeks time for a Lady riders race if I can get a good jockey for him. They are always turning and turning there, a bit like Sligo, and I think it will suit him.
“He won his bumper here six years ago and has won seven races since. He was my first ever winner and has been a very good servant.”
