Weld/McNamara take another big one at Galway
Dermot Weld recorded his third successive win of the feature race on today’s card, the carlton/galwaycity.ie (Q.R) Handicap when top weight Ghimaar came home in front under the very stylish Robbie McNamara.
McNamara raced the son of Dubai Destination in behind the leaders, the pair looked to be travelling well when taking up the lead from over 2f out and kept on well to hold off the efforts of Evening Rushour and Mountain Snow by a comfortable 2 ½ lengths.
“The big danger beforehand was carrying 12 stone, it’s a lot of weight for a four year old. The ground was definitely a bit slower than he would have liked.“
“The plan was to weight with him until inside the final furlong but the pace was very slow so Robbie decided to go on earlier” said winning trainer Weld.
Weld also revealed, “ We will now look at the Ebor Stakes at York for him next.”
Weld won this race four times as a jockey and was only fifteen when winning it for the first time.
