The ground drying out to good (from yielding) after a sweltering day at Ballinrobe proved fortunate for Ben Rumson as the third reserve made full use of his opportunity in the Daily Tips On theTote.com Apprentice Handicap.
A couple of the declared runners were taken out due to the change in going, and Ben Rumson punters were beaming in the sunshine as early quotes of 25/1 were taken and further support on track moved his price from 12/1 into 8/1.
Conor McGovern produced the Tim Doyle-trained gelding with a well-timed challenge in the straight, leading close home to beat Belarusian by half a length. Byron Beauty was just a head back in third.
Doyle’s wife Claire sad, “We got a telephone call at lunchtime to say we’d get in. He was a bit unlucky on his last few runs, and when he was in good form we said we might as well take our chance.
“Conor had not ridden for us before but he is riding well, and it’s all worked out well. Tim will probably find something similar for him on a small, tight track although hurdles should really be his game.”
