High class bumper performer Gilt Shadow made an impressive start to his jumping career when winning the Tayto Group Maiden Hurdle at Down Royal today, scoring for brothers and trainer/jockey combination Stuart and Stephen Crawford.
The son of Beneficial, runner-up in last season's Punchestown's Champion Bumper, gave away 8lbs and more to all bar one of his rivals but still readily quickened clear of the field from the second last, for a easy eight and a half lengths win over Rock The World
Afterwards trainer Stuart Crawford stated “that was the way I hoped he would do it.
“He has done everything right, has loads of ability and his pedigree is all staying. He has jumped really well from day 1 and it was really about getting today out of the way; hopefully he could be one for the big chase here (JNwine.com Champion Chase) in a few years time.”
Winning jockey Stephen Crawford, last year's Fegentri World Champion, added “I knew on form he was the best horse and I'd say he is a real good one, probably top class.
“He can be keen and his best run last year was in the Grade 1 bumper at Punchestown; he'll be at his best when stepping up in company.”
