Solwhit Fails but Byrnes Steals Show
Charles Byrnes' winners are rarely greeted with delight by the layers but after the success of the 50/1 shot, Bit Of A Devil in the Irish National Hunt Stallion Owners European Breeders Fund Maiden Hurdle, happiness is sure to have been the general mood of those standing-up in the betting ring.
The threes on shot from the yard, Solwhit was turned-over in the second but along with Dromin Hill Echo winner of the handicap chase, Bit Of A Devil completed a 407/1 double for the Ballingarry, Co. Limerick-based outfit.
There was hefty support for Blazing Beacon and No Reception in the two miles six furlong maiden hurdle but Bit Of A Devil (paid 150.10 Euro) under Justin Murphy was much too strong for the former, going on to score by five and a half lengths.
For Murphy who turned pro about three months ago and who works for Byrnes, this was a first success in the plate. The successful Pistolet Bleu gelding will now be aimed at a winners of one. (EM)
