Hot favourite Readin Tommy Wrong only just did enough to hold the late run of stablemate Lisnagar Fortune when winning the I.N.H. Stallion Owners Maiden Hurdle at Cork.
Sent off 8-15f, the Danny Mullins partnered five-year-old led at the third last, kicking a couple of lengths clear and looking set for a comfortable victory.
However, novicey jumps at the last two flights opened the door for his fast finishing stablemate Lisnagar Fortune to throw down a strong late challenge.
At the line, the Simon Munir & Isaac Souede owned gelding only had a short head to spare.
Danny Mullins commented: "Some of ours are taking a run at the moment and I think he can build on that. Often Willie's (Mullins) biggest problem is he has other horses in the race which can beat them but this was a nice starting point and there is plenty to build on.
"He jumped big over the last two and it was nice to hear his number being called - I was hoping I wasn't beaten and in fairness the other horse (Lisnagar Fortune) has probably improved. Lisnagar Fortune was dropping back in trip which probably suited."
Paddy Power cut Reading Tommy Wrong to 25/1(from 33/1) for the Supreme Novices Hurdle, while leaving him unchanged at 33/1 for the Ballymore and Albert Bartlett.
