Night Singer swoops to conquer
Night Singer and Fran Berry got up right on the line to nail Fairylike and Joseph O’Brien in the Freshford handicap at Gowran Park for trainer Adrian McGuinness.
The blinkered three-year-old colt had an SP of 10/1. Fairylike came home second at 11/2.
The Grey Celt was all the rage in the market being backed from 9/1 to 6/1 in the morning and then heavily supported from 8/1 to 5/1 at the track, however, the Verglass gelding failed to land the gamble coming in fifth.
Trainer McGuinness said: “He’ll go to Leopardstown on Thursday for a one mile two furlong apprentice handicap for three year olds only.
“He’s also in Killarney but I think the ground would be too soft for him there.
“He’s small but gutsy. Ian Brennan who used to ride for me advised me to buy the horse at the sales last year.
“He was third to Dubawi Gold [second in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas] in Ayr in a maiden last year.
“This is a lucky spot for me.” Lady Peters jinked and unshipped Billy Lee early in the race while in rear.
