Never say never for Twelfth

Wed 23rd Nov 2011, 15:51

Twelfth Of Never stormed home to win the battle of the mares in the beginners chase at Cork.

Only two mares lined up for the 2m5f event and they had it between them down the straight. Special Token had always been prominent and hit the front before the fourth last.

She was tracked through by Twelfth Of Never but looked in control before the last fence.

Declan Bates got a great tune from his mount on the run-in, however, and she flew home to put her head in front just in time.

"She's one of the most unlucky horses I've ever had and it's a good day to win a race with her," said winning trainer Liz Doyle.

"She barely wants to do it and the 7lb mares claim plus Declan's 5lb was a big help.

"She's been placed many times and has been quite difficult. We've had to pony her to the start a few times.

"She's owned by my sister Christina and her husband Glen (Howitt) and was previously owned by Matt O'Connor's father John."
