Six Stone Ned got off the mark when switched to hurdles for the first time in the opener at Ballinrobe this evening.
Noel Meade 's charge was placed four times in bumpers but struck at the first time of asking over timber in the Western People Maiden Hurdle.
Paul Carberry settled behind the leaders on the grey before taking closer order rounding the bend.
The Great Palm gelding hit the front before the final flight but had 5/2 favourite Passage Vendome for company.
A better leap at the last sealed things for Six Stone Ned and he was always in command in the closing stages, posting a two-and-a-half length verdict at 7/2.
"I'm the leading trainer for the season now," joked Meade after saddling the first winner of the new National Hunt season.
"He was a bit unlucky in his bumpers. Up north he couldn't get out and then he ended up giving away a lot of weight to a good four-year-old (Piper Hill in Thurles).
"He's always jumped well. He's had a busy campaign and while he likes goodish ground a break might do him no harm.
"He's probably alright and is only starting to grow up now." Noble Pageant was well-backed (12/1 into 6/1) but never got involved, finishing sixth.
