At the last meeting at Clonmel in the middle of February, Ring, County Waterford owner/breeder Mary O'Donnell saw her colours carried to success by Goulane Davina. Today it was the turn of Goulane Chosen to do the needful as he scored in the Slievenamon Rated Novice Chase.
Seamus Spillane does the training of Goulane Davina for Mrs O’Donnell, but it's David McGrath that has care of Goulane Chosen. Barry John Foley is a common link though as he rode both.
Today Foley went for home on Goulane Chosen, long overdue a chase win, from the third last fence.
He was soon looking good and favourite Double Island was well beaten in third when coming down at the last. Kilcarry Bridge the early leader in this event, followed home Goulane Chosen at a distance of fifteen lengths.
David McGrath said afterwards: "He'd good form but just lost his way a bit. We decided to take the bull by the horns today and see what he'd do. He deserved one.
"He went a good gallop on that ground, and had the other horses in trouble. I suppose the end justifies the means!"
