McNamara unphased by Awkward Moment
Dermot Weld's New Phase carrying the colours of his son Kris, overcame a final flight mistake to easily win the Corporate Hospitality At Fairyhouse Hurdle at Fairyhouse today under amateur rider Robbie McNamara.
McNamara, who certainly wouldn't be out of place in the professional ranks, moved the son of Spectrum to the front after the second last and was well clear at the final flight. However New Phase met the obstacle all wrong and was lucky to escape the error but eventually recovered to record an easy three lengths win over Awkward Moment
Afterwards Weld stated “New Phase is still a bit novicey and has lots to learn over hurdles. He'll go back to the Flat for a 1m2f handicap on The Curragh's opening day in a few weeks time and he may run at the Punchestown Festival.”
Easy to back odds-on favourite Dr Whizz (4/7 – 4/5f) disappointed badly under Tony McCoy, and trailed in a well beaten fifth.
