Catena Zapata bagged a second course and distance win over a mile at Dundalk today, as the jockey Bill Lee completed a double on Henry De Bromhead's gelding in the View Restaurant At Dundalk Stadium Handicap.
The son of Vadamos' only previous win was in November 2020 and while unsuccessful in seven subsequent starts, did compete at Group 3 and, most recently, at Listed level at Killarney in August.
Today Lee held free-going Catena Zapata in mid-division and produced him to lead inside the final furlong, eventually holding on for a neck win over Chavajod
Lee, earlier successful on the Sheila Lavery trained Annecherie later said “I won a maiden on him here and he was highly tried after that, he ran in a Derby trial and a few listed races.
“The last day I rode him, in Galway, he didn't stay 1m4f and he's come right back in trip.
“Off a break he's freshened up and he's fit and well. He travelled great all the way around, picked up and he's workmanlike when he's off the bridle but he kept galloping all the way to the line.
“From what he was running in, to now, it was a nice mark to be running off. He's obliged and hopefully he can go in again.”
