The Charles O'Brien trained Great Wide Open claimed his second win of the year and his in his third career when landing the Gowran Park Handicap, under Declan McDonogh, at Gowran today.
The son of Starspangledbanner was all out in the closing stages to hold off Expreso Brasileiro by a head and afterwards O'Brien stated “being drawn on the fence (1) and getting 'out' is worth quite a lot around here.
“I kept trying to get him to stay a mile and he doesn't and he pulled too hard last time. He tries too hard sometimes which is probably why he doesn't get a mile.
“He looks a seven-furlong specialist, and we'll find something else for him over the trip."
Great Wide Open was previously successful over five furlongs at Tipperary in 2015 and over today's seven furlongs at Dundalk in March.
