Emmet Mullins recorded a 1-2 in the Perennial Freight Tramore Handicap at Tramore today, scoring with bigger priced runner Gee Rex (10/1) which recorded a first win since being claimed by the trainer last October.
Mullins also ran 15/8 favourite and jumps horse Zero Turn in the 1m4f contest and while a winner over today's distance at the Galway festival, seemed caught for pace as winning jockey Mike O'Connor sent Gee Rex into a clear lead with two furlongs to race.
Zero Turn, under Seamie Heffernan, did close the gap in the final furlong but Gee Rex, claimed by Mullins for €15,000 at Dundalk last October, held on for a half length win.
Afterwards Mullins reported “he (Gee Rex) has been disappointing over hurdles and has been slow out of the stalls. Both of those things were out of the way today - they were two big things that were holding him back. It was great to come here and get that opportunity and take advantage of it.
"I told him to make the running but they went a fair gallop early doors and Mike was good to just take a lead for as long as he could. He got to the front then and just battled off all comers. It was a good run from Zero Ten in second under a big weight.
"I've no immediate plans for the two of them."
