Enchanted Evening for Weld/Smullen
Pat Smullen showed his champion quality and strength when getting Enchanted Evening (5/1) home in front in the fillies winners-of-one mile event.
In truth the race developed into something of a sprint in the straight, and Smullen had his mount in a prominent position to hold off the late surge of Face Reality (6/1) by a head with Deire Na Sli (3/1jt fav) just a neck away in third.
The placings were confirmed following a stewards enquiry into possible interference involving the placed horses. Juliet Capulet was withdrawn on veterinary advice about 20 minutes before the race.
Ray Carroll, representing winning trainer Dermot Weld, said: “She's had a couple of runs on heavy ground this year and seemed to like that surface better. The fitting of blinkers also helped her.”
