David O'Brien's Double Windsor served up surprise in the first divide of the extended two mile six furlong handicap chase in Limerick.
Sean Flanagan had him fourth as the race unfolded in the straight. The pair improved to third at the penultimate fence and readily moved to the head of affairs before the last.
The nine-year-old gelding ran right away from his rivals to come in by nine and a half lengths at 33/1. Black Samurai the 4/1 favourite, was a moderate second, half a length up on Dundeedy Lad (10/1).
Flanagan said: “It’s not the first occasion this horse has come to the races where we were borderline saying if he doesn’t put a performance in today it will probably be the end of him.
"He’s a quirky old sort of fella. He jumps well, wants really nice ground and needs everything to go his way.
“He needs to come off the back of a strong gallop. If he’s in the mood he’ll do it and if he’s not he won’t.
“They are a great crowd of owners (Fastey For Fun Syndicate) and I’m delighted to get them a winner.”
The Stewards requested a report from David M.O'Brien, trainer, as to the apparent improvement in form of Double Windsor, placed first, as compared with its recent form. Garrett Power, representative for David M. O'Brien stated that the reapplication of blinkers coupled with todays better ground had helped to bring about the apparent improvement in form. Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanation given. Furthermore, The Stewards, pursuant to the provisions of Rule 147(v) fined David M. O'Brien €130 for failing to lodge the appropriate authorisation form appointing a representative.
