Custom Cut recorded his eighth career win, and provided rider Danny Tudhope with his first Irish success, when landing the featured Invesco Pension Consultants Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown.
Formerly trained by George Kent and now in England with David O’Meara, the five-year-old gelding took control inside the final furlong of this mile event.
The 100/30 chance stayed on really well in the closing stages to beat 7/4 favourite Brendan Brackan by two and a quarter lengths, with Sruthan another half a length away in third.
Tudhope said, “He’s a real trier and a tough horse. I was told to have him handy but they were going too quick. He really picked up in the straight, and is a lovely genuine type.”
Pat Breslin, who owns the winner in partnership with Gary Douglas, said “I’m from Manchester and support United, and Gary is a big Rotherham fan so hence the red and white colours. We have been involved in a few syndicates but this is by far the best horse we’ve had.
“He’s in the Strensall Stakes at York next week but that may come a bit soon. We’ll be guided by David as to what is the best thing to do but the main plan is the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster.”
