Cosmo Renfro wore down front-runner Meehall on the run-in to claim victory in the three-mile handicap hurdle at Limerick.
The Shane Nolan-trained gelding attracted support in first time cheekpieces this afternoon, backed from 9/1 into the morning into 11/2.
He was produced to challenge turning from home by Kieren Buckley but had to knuckle down to gain a narrow advantage from Meehall going to the last.
The Arctic Cosmos gelding started to assert in the closing stages as he posted a length-and-three-quarter success over the 9/2 favourite.
Cosmo Renfro had been fifth in a maiden hurdle at the course last month and was sporting cheekpieces for the first time today.
"He had a couple of little issues and Neil (Cox, owner) has been very patient with him. His two runs previously here were good runs so we'll probably look to come back here at Christmas,” said Nolan.
"He handles the ground well, Kieren gave him a great ride and saved ground everywhere.
"It is hard to get winners, we have nine riding out and hopefully this horse can win again."
